For those new to this blog series, once a month I typically feature an entrepreneur whose idea has caught my eye. Last month, I decided to do something a little different and wrote about an entire team of innovators who are helping to minimize waste from the wine industry and create a sustainable fish feed. If you missed the blog, you can find it here.

This month, I decided to continue sharing innovations that inspire me. Based on my own experience in the business world, I have realized and focused on the importance of sustainability in business.

I like to celebrate other businesses who put in the extra effort to do their part in protecting this earth, which is why this month, I am celebrating WISErg, an innovation that is changing the way in which food is disposed of.

What you need to know:

WISErg is reinventing food waste management in the best way possible. By harvesting the nutrients from food scraps through their "˜harvester' and creating organic fertilizer to grow more food!

This tackles a large, worldwide challenge in sustainability food waste management. Traditionally, unused food ends up in a landfill, commercial compost or is disposed of through anaerobic digestion, all practices that are not good for the environment.

The solution WISErg is creating diverts food scraps away from one of these traditional methods by using a WISErg Harvester. This system, which can be used in grocery stores, cafeterias and restaurants alike, captures the nutrients in the food discard. These materials are then transferred to a nearby WISErg facility and then processed into fertilizer.

Why you should care:

The Harvester’s Nutrient Recovery System works in a unique way. When processing the food scraps, this innovation stabilizes valuable nutrients that would typically be lost in traditional waste management. This system also prevents food scraps from putrefying, which reduces emissions of greenhouse gasses, odors, and pests. By turning these nutrients into a liquid fertilizer, WISErg is bringing sustainability full circle!

I'm always thrilled to learn more about companies who are invested in sustainability "“ do you have any innovations or innovators you're passionate about? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
